Event banner: Before the Algorithm, After the Prompt, records, data and the real work of AI governance. IRMS Ireland, 21 October 2026, 10am, One Microsoft Court, Dublin

Every AI system runs on data. Every piece of data came from somewhere. And in most organisations, nobody has done the work to establish whether that somewhere is trustworthy, current, complete, or even findable.

This event, hosted by IRMS Ireland during EU AI Innovation Month, cuts against the grain of the wider month’s agenda to examine what has to be true about your information and records environment before any AI deployment can be considered responsibly governed. It also broadens that lens to address a critical but often overlooked requirement: understanding and managing the end-to-end environmental impact of AI, from data acquisition and storage through model training, deployment, and ongoing use.

Drawing on the EU AI Act’s requirements for data quality and traceability, the Data Governance Act’s framework for trusted data sharing, and hard-won practitioner experience across regulated sectors in Ireland and Europe, the event covers four interlocking themes: data quality as the silent variable in every AI outcome; retention and classification as underestimated AI risk controls; the accountability gap when records cannot support the audit trail that law and policy require; and the professional opportunity for information and records managers to lead – not follow – the AI governance agenda in their organisations.

The format is deliberately practitioner-centred: short provocations from experienced speakers, a cross-sector panel, and structured discussion time that attendees can take back to their desks.
