ARA Ireland at the Oireachtas committee on the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill 2023
As Chair of the Archives and Records Association, Ireland, archivist Niamh Ní Charra was invited as a witness to the meeting of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media on the Detailed Scrutiny of Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill 2023, (proposed by Patrick Costello, TD), at Leinster House this week. The amendment seeks to oblige RTÉ, Ireland’s national public broadcaster, to preserve and make accessible its archives to researchers. Witnesses were asked to submit their opening statement along with a briefing document in advance. At the meeting, a double session, witnesses were asked to read their opening statement and were then asked for their expertise in a series of Q&As following each session. Niamh was a witness in the second session.
Video and transcript for the full double session, including her opening statement and Q&As are available here, and her opening statement can be read here. *
